the toilet saga continued yesterday :/
one of hte toilets (living room) was leaking, dripping down over the washing machine. It had done it before (when we bought the house the “subflooring was weak” b/c the wood bits had partially rotted from the water) so I figured it was something related to that. For instance, the cast iron flange (the pipe-funnel-connector-thing in the floor tha the ring for hte toilet attaches to) was all rusty to hell and shit. So rusty, in fact, that it had been noticed before, since one of hte toilet-mounts was on some add-on piece under the flange lip.
So I bought a flange/floor extra-mount kit and a “closet ring” (which is hte part on top of the flange where the toilet bolts attach). Put in the kit, which raised the flange up some (i’t supposed to be 1″ higher than the top of the floor, so it was actually kindof in the right place now, actually), and went to attach the ring.
Except, sicne the ring is supposed to be the top of the flange, it doesn’t exactly go over the flange. more kindof ontopof the flange. But OK, directions on the kit say to drill holes to mount down the flange, I figure the ring is mounting on the flange, so i’ll just mount all the way down … except galvanized steel does not respond well to hand-held household electric drills. not even ones with bits designed for drilling metal :o
broke two bits (one into three pieces!!!) and decided to just mount the ring on the two exterior holes it had which were outside the range of hte kit. Figure that’s tight, the flange is “mounted”. did that with some wood bits to support the ring and mount through. now the toilet’s a little high on the center, so i had to put in some wood bits front and back to balance it. still a bit wobbly side to side, need to get it balanced properly and with more than just “what do i have laying aruond that i can use”, but it doesn’t appear to be leaking.
Of course, all of that, and I think it may have just been the seal wasn’t right when i set it the first time. but i didn’t want to be taking it out a third time :o
