hindi 1 4 October, 2005 at 10:21 am
got most of the way through hindi 1 this morning (10 30min lessons in the set; this was the first)
I’m not sure this is the same dialect my dad’s family speaks, so that could turn out to be an issue in the long run. but hopefully it’s “close enough”
ab: you
kya: do (yes/no interrogative)
hhe: verb/suffix; are
hhoo/hhmm: not sure about the sound. think it’s hhoo but with a palate thingie making it mmm sounding. verb suffix (probably verb/suffix, but not sure it works as a standalone verb really); am
sha-mas(h)-ti: understand
sha-ma-ki-ji-yeh: excuse me
an-gra-zy: english
am-ri-ki: american (ooooh)
hin-d(h)i: hindi
t(h)o-la t(h)o-la: a little ; could be t(h)o-ra t(h)o-ra
sh(e)ri-mahn: sir
gi-ne-hi: no
shamkijiyeh. kya ab shamastihhe? : excuse me, do you understand?
kya ab angrazi shamastihhe? do you understand english?
ginehi, sheriman: no, sir
kya ab amrikihhe? you are american?
i can’t remember “yes” or “miss”, which is the response to that question. need to redo that part of the lesson :o
