car bill 6 March, 2007 at 5:04 pm
so, dropped my car off this morning for the insurance appraisal. and apparently i get a rental car whilst it’s in for repairs :o AND i don’t have to pay for it!
holy crap! cool :o
anyway, got the call this afternoon. my 5.5 yr old chevy impala is worth 6-7k (4-5 if i try to sell it at carmax, obviously they want to make money off it :o). the repair bill? 4500$.
apparently i need a new quarter panel (it’s the part of the car in the back, rear to door, over the wheelwell). a new door. the frame needs a bit of pulling out but nothing significant or dangerous. and they’re going to be checking the alignment/etc b/c the hit came in through the wheel.
i’m in the rental until next week sometime :o but at least i don’t have to pay for the car, anything over the deductible on the repairs (fairly sure my deduct is still 250 … i hope i didn’t get around to changing that :o think i decided it saved me like 15$/6mo and wasn’t worth upping), or a new car payment
see, if they totalled my car out, my idea was to hijack my old car at my parents (79 volare), or one of their cars, for the summer at least. volare would be hot as hell in summer (mmm vinyl seats and an AC that hasn’t worked since reagan was president), but tolerable since i wear long pants and it’s only a 10-min trip anyway. in winter, however, the engine is slow to warm, doesn’t tick over well until it IS warm (thus making my 10 minute trip have a 30 minute warm-up at either end!!), and the heat kicked the bucket when i was still getting my undergraduate degree :o and i have way more trouble with cold (frostbite bad) than hot (heatstroke annoying). but i figured for the summer i could swing it, and maybe by fall i could talk my parents out of one of their other cars ;)
kiir wanted to get me a hyundai or such (like 10k car, of which hopefully the insurance payout would cover 7 or so). car parment would suck still :/ and since i’ve been looking at a subaru outback so we could have a good station wagon, it would be moving kinda the wrong direction :o
of course, the new plan is to get her a minivan and i get her car when it’s time to upgrade mine, so the kids may be in college before i get the subaru. and won’t it be time for a midlife crises by then or soemthing?
No your midlife crisis comes when you are in your mid 40s normally, so the kids will still be Middle/High Schoolish age then (since that is only 15 years or so from now).
