broadway, NYC and NYE 2 January, 2006 at 1:38 pm

went to NYC on the 29th, came back yesterday.

trip up wasn’t too bad, amtrak to NY/penn then the subway from 34th to 23rd to 42nd (yeah, we kinda got on the wrong direction) (i looked at the train, it said, right on top, that it was going towards where i wanted to go! … of course, apparently NYC labels their trains with both endpoints, order unrelated DOH) When we turned around, while the doors were still open, the guy on the PA is announcing where the train is going, what the next 5 stops are, and then what the next stop is, again, in case you missed it. THEY COULDN’T'VE DONE THAT GOING THE OTHERWAY??

trip back, we actually picked the right train. :)

Saw Wicked and Spamalot. USA was having a 2 day marathon of law&order (SVU friday, CI saturday), so we spent the rest of the time watching that ;) looked out the window and shook our head at the idjits standing in rain/ice/snow at times square for 5+ hours before the ball dropped.

Friday we saw the 2pm showing of Wicked. OK, there ISN’T a 2pm friday showing, except when friday is saturday b/c saturday is sunday. then there is :p

Wicked, in case you’re unaware, is the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. As told by following her through life. I read the book a year or so ago, and i really liked it. I think that threw me off the show a bit, however, b/c they made storyline changes. Mostly to clip out long portions of the book that gave background on things so that that thing could be important later. Clip it out later, give it’s part to something else, and now you get rid of 4 chapters of junk :) Junk that’s hard to “act” no less. There were also some … story changes, however, which threw me a little more. Again, I can see how it’s necessary to fit the medium, so i can accept it, but it was still a bit of a wrench.

I thought it was really good, kiir thought it was wicked ;) the major difference in assessments being that she didn’t read the book and so didn’t haveto live with the whole twitchiness thing of “but … that’s not what happened!”

Saturday was the 2pm showing of Spamalot. Convenient thing, Spamalot’s theatre is just the other side of Phantom of the Opera’s theatre from our hotel :o Unless we’re going to a show with friends, and with noticeably cheaper tickets, it’s unlikely we’ll see spamalot again.

That’s not to say it wasn’t good. It was. Fuckin’ hilarious. If you like monty python, of course. But that was kind of the problem. It broke “fourth wall” so often and so willingly :/ and it was VERY much a comedy :o good spin on the movie. Just not really something t hat’s going to be funny (to me at least) a second time. Well, OK, it’ll still be funny. But not 100$ worth of ticket funny :o I also tend not to like watching monty python that often (i’m a computer guy who doesn’t drop everything to watch or quote python at the drop of a hint, i know i know), so that may be part of it. But I don’t think it’d be all that great a second time. Bits of htings you missed, but there was nothing interesting that wasn’t BLATANTLY thrown into your face to begin with :o

I did like how they handled the cow-tapault, though :)

when we got out, we went to grab bagels (place was closed NYD),cops were tellilgn us that we couldn’t get out in that direction, but let us go when we wanted to go to the bagel shop not out. guys who were arguing with the cop when we started past suddenly claimed that they just really wanted bagels too :o

took us forever to get into the hotel. Imagine if you will. We enter at the corner of X and Y. (Y goes maybe 2 blocks and empties into times square). The doors to the hotel are a hundred feet? up X. took us 10 minutes :o oi. got dinner from the deli in the hotel later, and wtched law and order while looking out the window occasionally to mock the peopel at times square. People said thta since we were going to be there, we should go … but (a) it’s cold, (b) it’s cold, (c) you can’treally do anything after you get there like 5 hours before midnight, (d) what do i want to hang around with a million of my closest friends for? and i don’t even know these people! as if!
