Get Out! 22 March, 2009 at 9:29 pm
So, last night DK took me upstairs and had me reading to him in bed starting at about 8pm or so. He wasn’t quite ready to go to bed, but he was tired and he felt it was about time for bed so he led me upstairs by the hand and closed his door and brought me some books. He even snuggled in and pulled the covers up on himself. It’s obscenely cute, actually, when he does that.
Anyway, after a bit I had to go change PI’s diaper, and I commented that DK seemed like he might be ready for bed. This somehow led to a pushing match between Kiir’s parents about which one of them got to put him to bed. Grandpa won.
Now, first of all, when we put him to bed, it’s a very cooperative process. Which we take grief over, because “you need to set the limits, he needs to obey them.” But we set general guidelines and keep things flexible. Which means that when he seems to be sufficiently tired to go to bed, frequently about 11ish, I’ll take him up and we read some, maybe 10-20 minutes usually, and then we’ll turn off the light and he’ll snuggle up with my head on his chest and go to sleep in a bit.
When Dadi and Dada put him to bed last weekend, while we were at the hospital for PI’s birth, he basically passed out on their laps watching a movie around 12:30 and they transferred him to the bed. That might have been partially due to us having vanished they were giving him more slack than they might normally, I don’t know.
When grandpa took him for bed last night, he laid down with him and forcibly held DK down. Last time he was up he did that too, and the bedtime story was how mommy was sad because her grandpa had died. He didn’t get very far into the story this time before I came back in and picked DK up, b/c DK was absolutely hysterical. It wasn’t “I don’t wanna go to sleep” screaming, it was more “help!!!! DADDDDY!!!! WHERES MY DADDDDDDDYY!!!!?????” screaming. So I went in and picked him up, and he grabbed the door to push it all the way open, since I’d only opened it partway in my haste. Then, clutching the door and my neck, he turns and shouts “GET OUT!”
We went back and did bed about 30 minutes later when he had calmed down again. Took him ten minutes to stop sobbing and gasping :(
