go go gadget hippy 19 March, 2007 at 6:23 pm

a pair of technophiles, computers and electronics EVERYWHERE …

we’re going all jungle hippy with the baby :o kiir’s planning to not use formula, we’re talking cloth diapers, we’ve got a sling to try carrying the baby around on person rather than always in a carrier/etc

hospital BAD at 8:40 am

*sigh* spent most (all) of yesterday at the hospital. got there at 10, got out in time to not make it to the pharmacy before it closed at 5.

kiir was still doing 60-sec contractions every 4 minutes, although they were still very light. and the baby was quietd (not kicking/moving/etc like usual) … so the midwife wanted us to come in so she could check the baby.

midwife was busy yesterday, didn’t get to us until nearly noon! then the urine sample went for processing (it’d been sitting there for two hours waiting for the doc to say if she wanted it run or not). then when they were about ready to give kiir a sleeping pill so she could get some relief from the contractions an a good nights sleep (baby woke up when we got there, he’s perfectly fine) … results came back with a UTI. probably the same UTI that they were talking about friday night was possible, except the test came back unclear. then the nurse and midwife who both seemed quite put out that we were there (when the midwife had told us to come in) decided to send us home rather than doing something useful. which brings us back to the hospital yesterday where it came back positive.

so then two litres of water. wheeeee. and antibiotics. wheeeee. and then the shift change and when the fluid finally finished at 3-3:30, the new nurse tried to put on anotehr bag (3 litres? wait wait wait), saying the midwife hadn’t talked to her about having checked kiir. i don’t know what being re-checked has to do with a third litre when the directions said two, but no! still busy midwife, managed to get in around 4-4:15, and another half hour before we got out.

got to the pharmacy at 4:55, they close at 5. went and found another pharm open until 6 so kiir could get her antibiotics filled. then the contractions were getting harder last night, so she didn’t take the sleeping pill :o

*sigh* the hospital is seriously starting to SUCK

what’s in a contraction? 17 March, 2007 at 2:45 pm

a contraction by any other name … is probably shorter, frankly :o

kiir was having contrations yesterday evening, and at 5min apart, >1min apiece, over more than an hour, that’s hitting all the triggers for “go to the hospital”. but we called the midwife first, just to get some feedback on what she thought, figuring 3 weeks early is a tad early

they couldn’t decide on the phone and told us to come in to the hospital for checking. 3-3.5 hours later, buncha walking around “to help the process along” and a few bottles of water, they decided that they still weren’t sure :o definitely contractions, definitely every few minutes, definitely for a healthy duration, but no dilation or any other symptoms. apparently contractions aren’t an identifying symptom, just a generic symptom :o

so we came home, and they’re sitll continuing, so we’re basically just waiting until something changes :o

vid cam 7 March, 2007 at 10:21 am

we’ve been planning (since last fall) to get a HDD camcorder when the time comes. baby being under a month away, I guess the time is here ;)

went yesterday to check out the Sony DCR-SR80 60G HDD model at Ritz … asked what others they had, and he told us they usually have teh 30G (SR60) model. But not today. (i thought he said the SR60, kiir thinks he might have been babbling on about hte SR40). the SR80 says it does 16:9 recording, inherent widescreen handy. the SR60 (40, whatever) doesn’t say anything. so he goes online.

it turns out the 40, 60 and 80 are being phased out. like RIGHT NOW. b/c the new line (42?, 62, 82) are shipping the 17th or 19th (sony said 19th, guy said 17th) … the new 30G does 16:9 (and after much searching at home i finally established the old one seems to too). and it’s expected to be identical in cost to the current 30G. likewise the new 60G will be the same as the current 60G, but better optical zoom and some other bits.

So we decided to wait, we can pick it up in two weeks instead. Either the current 60 will come down in price, or more likely we’ll just get the new 30 or 60. the 60 does like 40 hours of video, so the 30 should be like 20, which oughta be sufficient, yaknow? but we might get the 60 anyway, just to be sure when we’re on vacation. b/c the laptop drive fills up fast with my itunes TV shows :o

baby border check~! 6 March, 2007 at 5:07 pm

got the border up in baby’s room this afternoon. took a while, but i tacked it up, then checked it, tweaked, repeat. when it was good i started at one end and took out hte tacks as i peeled out the backing and smoothed to the wall. not 100% level, but i’m not convinced the floors, walls, or ceiling are 100% level anyway :p

then we worked on cleaning the room some for hte furniture delivery friday. unfortunately, that kinda included dumping some stuff into K’s room. poor K, he gets so put upon in this whole baby mess. kiir doesn’t take him on walks, i’m spending ltos of time trying to get ready, and his room keeps getting usurped with all the crap that used to be in the third bedroom since we didn’t use it anyway :/

oh well. hopefully getting lots of camp (more than we can afford, technically, i suppose) will make him feel better about the whole sordid affair :o

living room MIA 28 February, 2007 at 11:30 am

help! my living room has gone MIA!

my mother in law is in town, and buying stuff. there’s the IKEA furniture, then kiir talked her into a huge spending spree on baby stuff (pack and play, bathtub, etc) at babys-r-us (only 3 outfits, i was so impressed)

then yesterday we got me some pants for work, rugs for the first floor (why’d we put in nice hardwood floors to cover them up with carpets? :o)

so my living room is incredibly overfull. b/c all that baby stuff? i don’t think any of it’s gone to baby’s room yet. which is just as well, i’m going to need somewhere to put the baby furniture when they deliver that :o

infant care pt 1 21 February, 2007 at 10:39 am

had infant care class last night. the other half of the session is tomorrow night.

to give you an idea of this class, “had infant uh care um class last um night.” … and this lady’s been doing this for 4 years? cripes lady. and you don’t have to be all “yes excellent!” EVERY TIME someone answers a question! but when you do a round-the-room exercise “what will you do when the baby’s crying?” and you get to the 12th couple and they suggest, the other 11 things having failed, maybe putting the baby in the car for a bit to see if they settle down, perhaps jumping straight to the “well , we certainly don’t want to do that as a first response! you can’t spoil a newborn, but if you always put them in the car first thing, they’ll learn that behavior blah blah blah” … ok, lady, we’ve already tried: diaper, feeding, burping, singing, walking, naptime, playing, moving room to room for new scenery, temperature and clothes changing in case they’re hot or cold, and a couple other things. this is called “wits end” and we’re grasping at straws, b/c this freakin’ baby is being COLICY!

and you don’t have to prevaricate on EVERY answer with “well, every baby is different”, even if the parents are being somewhat stupid. And if you don’t know the answer, just say “I’m not sure, you should ask your pediatrician/ob/insert-someone-here” instead of going on a 10 minute tangential where you don’t even manage to answer the question you’re trying to pretend they asked!!! GAH!

and WHY do baby-dolls make me want to gouge out their eyes??? WELL THATS PROBABLY B/C EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT! WHA???

i wasn’t taken with the class, does it show? :)

Weekend notes 19 February, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Well, general bits and parts. K’s trainer came by yesterday to look at his “home environment” and give us suggestions on what we might need to do to get him ready for a home invasion by the blob. Mostly we’ve done what she was going to say, apparently, but she did want us to start “ignoring him” and carrying around the baby-doll, so he gets used to something else taking our attention, and so he can learn that when we’ve got baby we can’t play.

I just feel like a complete git wandering around with a baby doll in my arms :o what am I, an 8 year old girl playing with dolls? cripes :o

Put away all of the laundry (well, not all; 90%+ though; mostly have sheets and towels left, and some of my clothes where the dresser is blocked by the crap i threw in that room when i had to clear the floors). Went through a couple of the boxes and consolidated. Went through the filing cabinet, threw away (read: shredded) a bunch of documents. Like, the part where we’ve refinanced at least one mortgage every year since we moved in. We suck with money management :/

Didn’t paint the bathroom. Didn’t hang the shelves. Went to order the furniture for delivery, but apparently at ikea that just means “after you’ve bought it, we’ll d rive it home” and since part of hte problem here is that I can’t lift the stuff by myself … uh, not helping. But one of the parts we wanted is discontinued! DOH! (and it’s not at another ikea anywhere near by, either, I checked :o)

Sliced up my hand trying to take out the drain in the half-bath so i could actually make htat sink work :o tried to cook some over the weekend. The fondue tasted weak. The baked potato soup is all sweet and weird an’ shit. Not sure if we’re gonna eat the rest or toss it later this week :/

clean clean clean 7 February, 2007 at 2:04 pm

So, I’ve spent the weekends for something like 3 months cleaning the house piecemeal. then in january i had to crash out the living room. i got a lot of the crap from there into the basement room (certianly not using the sewing machine NOW!), but other bits went into the downstairs bedroom, k’s room, baby’s room.

so, even though i’ve thrown out a huge amount of crap, and i’ve worked my ass off, kiir’s mom is coming beginning of march. to help us clean. b/c “the house really needs it” …

why did i bother? i know it’s never good enough, and i know i can only do so much before i get pissy about it. especially when k’s following me all over going “wanna play wanna play?” and pregnant kiir is on the computer playing games like i wanna be doing :o

Of puppies and babies 5 February, 2007 at 3:28 pm

We picked up a “screaming katy” baby doll the other day. ok, so, it’s got some wholly unmemorable name and it was a pain in the ASS to find the damned thing. the idea was we needed something baby-shaped and baby-sized that made baby-sounds, so k can start getting used to the annoying damned whiny loud thing that disturbs his naps.

i mean, we have a CD with baby sounds, too, so he can get used to the sounds from the computer, but i don’t think kiir ever opened that and put it on her computer.

kiir took it out of the box and was playing with it, when she hit some sound that K was NOT pleased with :o she we got him to settle down, and i went to put the doll on the sofa next to him, so he could get used to it. and kiir’s all “no don’t do that!” “why, we want him to get used to it, so he’s willing to just curl up next to baby” “yeah, but not destroy the baby!” .. He’s been going to camp, he’s unlikely to destroy anything, and he’s not likely to break a toy that he’s seen mommy playing with, b/c he knows it’s only his stuffed animals he can eviscerate. he’s really quite good about it, honestly

of course, he had no interest in laying down next to this this this THING that stole part of HIS sofa! so I moved “thing” to the coffee table, and he jumped down and went around to bark at it some more :o this could take a while, getting him to accept. and it’s going to be a pain in my ass when i want to just sit and play on the computer :o

and today he didn’t go to camp … hopefully he’s still wound down some from 3 days. I doubt it, but maybe :o if not, maybe i’ll squeak a baby at him and clean the house some more. b/c, you know, i’ve only been on that for 5 months, and I only have 1.5 or so more before baby breaks into the place and all my hard work goes up in stunningly annoying flames as 3 metric tons of baby stuff appears in the house and gets played with by the grandparents and everyone who comes to visit even though baby’s still sleeping

and then it goes downhill. i hope it warms up a LOT before then. b/c K’s going to need some quality time so he doesn’t feel like he’s suddenly being ignored by me. he has separation issues, and it’s possible that he might look at the baby as a rival, then, and that would be bad. at least until baby’s old enough to play back. :/ in the meantime, K gets lotsof camp!
