Spooky Halloween 28 August, 2008 at 8:51 pm

One of the shows we have on DVD for DK is PBS Kids’ Word World. It’s cute, not particularly insipid, and educational.

Earlier in the week we were at Target and remembered that disc 4 should be out now (came out last week actually). When Kiir managed to find it, she also found the halloween disc. Which is 2 12-minute episodes, but at least it only cost 5$ yaknow?

Except we have an issue. DK dislikes one of the episodes. And by dislikes I mean HATES. It scares the living bejeezus out of the boy. The first episode, about 5 minutes in or so? one of the characters is sleepwalking with a sheet over their head. A Ghost, if you will. He’s OK until the ghost starts wandering around. Then he just starts screaming.

He did it Tuesday night when we got the vid, but it was after bedtime (he wasn’t willing to go down yet) so we figured he was just tired. Wednesday morning he did it again when Kiir put the vid in. And we tried it again tonight, I figured maybe if he could sit on my lap he’d be OK. But he was up and wandering around when that part started and *blammo*. Poor babe.

He kinda digs the second episode. But changing discs for 15-minutes … Maybe in a month or three

Updated Blog Addresses and LAFs! 27 August, 2008 at 9:51 pm

So, yeah. We did some more toying around.

Kiir’s new blog is now at www.milefrommainstream.net, with it’s new name (and the new look that is on the old blog because she was doing that when I set up the new install :o)

The Kitchen Dragons site has moved to kitchen.psychotomy.net. We decided that we simply weren’t using it anywhere near enough to justify it’s own domain, so now when it comes up for renewal I can let it pass peacefully :o I may also end up expanding the site to include crafts, or we might set up a new site for the various asides we have. Not sure, since it’s not like I keep up with the three I have now, OTOH random posts about woodburning or scrapbooking or sewing or what-have-you would kindof clutter up this blog, clash with the kitchens, and just doesn’t go with the tech-centric deadbeef site. But, then again, I haven’t actually done any sewing in … years? And the woodburning hasn’t yet gone past proof of concept, so HEY!~ whatever

0xDEADBEEF (deadbeef.psychotomy.net) has a new look, again. And I seriously do intend to work on things there. Eventually. No really. Like posts.

For a few weeks there I was doing good with a post here every day, and I think that worked OK. Fell out of the habit, however, and it’s hard to get back into it. Especially since things at the office picked up and I’m loaded with work these days.

New Look at 8:31 pm

This week has been upating the blogs and the looks and everything.

For instance, I put a theme on mine ! Working on prettying up Kitchen Dragons, and maybe even posting on it more. Although with only me and DK eating most nights, there hasn’t been that much recipe toying.

Kiir’s new blog name 26 August, 2008 at 9:31 pm

So Kiir decided that “Math Freak” just didn’t fit her blog anymore. What with there not having been a math-related post in about 2 years or something. Unless you count the counting which week pregnant she is or how old DK is … Which isn’t really freakishly math-y :o

So she’s picked the new name “A Mile From Mainstream”. I think it’s catchy ;) Read her post about it

She’s still working out what the new URL should be. Because www.amilefrommainstream.net seems excessively long :o

This is not the post you’re looking for at 2:29 pm

Oi. So I was going to blog some this afternoon, but I spent the whole time working.

And by “whole time” I mean all 2 hours of DK’s nap. Which is shorter than his usual 3-4hrs when I’m not home. Oi.

So maybe I’ll blog later :o

Playgrounding 23 August, 2008 at 10:18 pm

The last few evenings we’ve (DK and I) been going up to the playground after dinner. The current setup is K’s walk with DK in the stoller, home and dinner, then DK and I go for a walk. And all week he’s been choosing the playground.

Wednesday (Thursday?) he started going up the big kids playgym. They’ve got two of them. One that says it’s for ages 2-5 and one 5-12. So of COURSE he likes climbing up the 5-12! So he goes up and then had the bright idea that he could turn around and back onto the big slide, like it was a staircase. And then he’d slide down. Absolutely loved that idea! Kept getting to the bottom, running back to the stairs, climbing up an doing it again.

Unfortunately, then he forgot that plan the next day. So he’d go up, start trying to climb down it like stairs, realizing that that wasn’t working, turn around, come off the slide and then start looking to walk off the side of the structure. From ~6 maybe 7′ … And of COURSE the structure is open on BOTH sides there. Four sides — one is the slide, one is the stairs down a level, one is a slide pole, and one is a ladder. He seems to prefer trying to come off on the ladder side :/

Today he kept (thankfully) coming down a level and playing at hte top of the lower slide. Which I can actually reach up from the outside and take his hand and coax him out onto it. Not sure why he suddenly changed his mind about the big slide, but it’s not like I’m going to push him on it. I just wish he’d quit climbing to the top to turn around and come back down ;)

We also hit the big-kid swings today. Largely because I’m a very hands off kindof dad. I let him choose where he wants to play and what he wants to do, I’m just there to make sure he doesn’t crack his skull. Which causes trouble because all the other dads follow their 5 yr olds up the big structure, and then whenever I reach up to barrier him from coming over the side they think I’m reaching for him. I’m sure they all think I’m nuts, I let him climb up on his own, then I stand at the bottom trying to pick him off the side until they come to my rescue and hand him down, and then I turn and let him do the same thing again. Bah.

Anyway, big kid swings. I sat him down after he insisted on climbing onto them (he loves swings, so it wasn’t surprising, honestly). And i’m trying to hold his hands on the chains and push a little and suddenly FOOSH! he slips forward off the front, his hands pop out and he’s flat on his back in the dirt. With the biggest damned grin on his face. And he insists on climbing up to do that AGAIN! Only this time he falls before I even finish getting him settled, and he lands face down, getting his eyes and mouth full of dust most likely. And he did NOT like that. So we moved on back to the slide :o

Apparently he’s very unusual, in his exploration and his friendliness. One parent said her kid (older than DK) hadn’t been out amongst other kids very often so she kept fussing at her to wait her turn (while DK is trying to decide if he’s going down slide A, mom is telling the little girl to wait her turn to go past him to slide B. Oh well, sorry, DK isn’t really going to mind, he’s undecided). Obviously there’s the part where I let him choose his own activities. Just seems like if I want him to play, I should let him decide how. Otherwise it’s more like homework :o

Still purging 16 August, 2008 at 7:26 pm

So, still working on all this cleaning …

Eight bags of trash out on Wednesday. 4 bags of recyc sunday night.

Today I went to the dump again. Took three big boxes of electronics (including most of those harddrives from last week). An old desk chair. The Sun boxes & monitor that I’ve had since like 03 and never touched more than moving it from one storage region to another.

In the last week I’ve cleaned the living room to its core. And then cluttered it up again with bits from other cleaning. I cleaned the bedroom mostly and vac’d it. The basement is largely cleared. The kitchen is partially done.

Kitchen & Hallways are the priority for tomorrow. So tired of cleaning. Kiir told me to take the evening off. But I’m not sure it’s gonna be ‘done’ before they get back :/

The Great Purge(tm) of 2008 10 August, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Kiir and DK went to visit her family. Left Saturday morning. K and I have 10 days to ourselves.

Of course, the last two times they went, I was supposed to clean. The first time I did about 60-90 minutes of cleaning a night, then kindof got swept into Bioshock … Kiir was unimpressed with my complete lack of cleaning.

The second time we had started playing EQ2 again. And I spent the WHOLE time playing EQ2. I got like 5 levels or something. But I did ZERO cleaning. Oops. Kiir was less than unimpressed. She was downright pissed. Because I’d said I’d clean, and then I didn’t.

So the house has been kindof sitting in it’s own filth for months. And since DK started in with the blueberries, raspberries, blackberries … sure, he eats other things, but they don’t stain NEAR as bad. And those stains have been ground into the carpet for months. Because he kindof drops berries here and there, then someone steps on them, and then it just keeps setting. And the living room has been full of toys. And we still can’t use the basement because it’s still full of crappagio.

SO! The Great Purge ™ of 2008

Sick Puppy :( 1 August, 2008 at 9:36 pm

K’s been sick the last few days. I think it was related to the beets tuesday. FYI : Beets should be cooked like potatoes. The recipe that said to put them in an inch of water to cook? Bullshit. Pure and utter BULL. Because then? After an hour? They’re still rather hard and inedible. But DK and I tried them, and I think I gave one to K (and DK probably tossed him some)

Except it turns out that, while beets are not toxic to dogs … they don’t agree with one another. *sigh* So K’s been sick the last two days, today I took him to the vets. 130$ worth of stuff (well, 900$, but because I went ahead and upgraded to the higher level pet health plan, a bunch more was covered) (that’ll cost like 200$ a year, but I was planning to do it in the next year or so anyway, because the one we were on was basically “well puppy visits”, and between being six and having DK around … K’s gotten sick more in the last year than in the previous 5 combined), and they decided that basically he ate something. That was their initial estimation too, but they ran the tests because the symptoms were the same as a bunch of really bad shit :/ tests came back negative though, including the (now included) X-Ray :o

They did decide that he had some infection (the nurse had said something about pancreatitis or something making him mucus-y, so I assume it’s the same one), and they gave him an anti-biotic for it. Some shots and meds for his tummy, but basically said he was fine. YAY!

And NEVER, EVER read the pamphelets they have in doctors (or vets) offices. Especially if you’re there with a sick baby or puppy. Because those things sound like whatever you’re looking at! HOLY CRAP! ACK! AUGH! *whew*

Got home and he’s already eaten a scooby that he’s been carrying around since Wednesday. So I think he’s doing better yay!

Busy Busy Busy at 9:26 pm

So, things have been busy lately, haven’t managed to post. (and you think this site is bad, the only update in like two months on my crypto blog was a post after vacation saying “damn, busy! will post soon” … apparently I LIE LIKE A RUG)

Anyway, posting some now. So, for those of you who have been bitching: SCREW YOU! Some of us work for a living, dammit!
