it’s been a while, i admit.
desmond’s getting big (14lbs, 25.5″ on his last visit). he’s happy, responsive, and likes to smile and chuckle to himself at all the idjits around him (that’s me). he’s getting too big for the in-bed sleeper we have for him, so he’s starting to spend the majority of the night in his actual “co sleeper” mini-crib thing. it’s in our room, so it’s easier to get him and hear him and such. i’m sure he’ll move to his actual crib eventually, but for now it’s nice to have him in the room so we can monitor him easily.
k’s accepted des as one of his own. he’s still not sure whether this is good or bad, but it’s acceptable so far. he’s even come up to the baby a few times. and the other night, des had his foot on k’s back. ok, k was curled up in my lap and des was in my arms, and his foot barely touched the puppy, but still. and yesterday he spit up and got some on the puppy and K just sorta looked at him, sighed, and laid back down.
yard hasn’t really grown back properly. mind you, it’s all the weeds, none of the new grass seed. *sigh* back yard is succesfully desolate, though. need to get to that soon.
dug out hte sewing machine last night, we’re going to try to make outfits for rennfest this year. dunno if i’ll actually get to it or just pretend, but it’s worth trying. i bought this expensive sewing machine after all !!!
otherwise, been trying to cut back on our costs and get back in the black. not working so hot yet, but getting there.
*sigh* everything is so busy, and desmond can’t even move himself to get into trouble yet!!!
The birds appear to be OK.
Well, technically, I couldn’t really look at them. Mama Mockingbird was in the nest, and papa was on the fence other side of the yard. I felt it was ill advised to show too much interest, or get too close :o
But since mama’s there, I presume babies are OK with mama home
so, i think i may have kindof killed a bunch of baby birds yesterday. not really killed them, but kindof
I was cutting out the bushes and tree-things in the backyard, and took most of it out when i noticed a nest in the branch i was about to lop. I pulled back the obscuring bit a bit, and there’s 3 or 4 baby birds in there mouths up and open, hoping i’m mama with dinner :( I’m hoping i left enough bush for them to be protected, and that i wasn’t too close to contaminate them with my scent and mama WILL come back with dinner :/
I’ll find out friday when I haul stuff out, I’ll check on them again. If they’re there and happy, I leave the bush b/c mama obviously came back. so I’ll have this one bush thing sitting around until mid-summer when they’re old enough to fly away. otherwise, I’m going to feel like crap for driving mama off/leaving them open to predators :(
*sigh* bad attriel, no cookie!
so, just read a post about “Kromofons” over at Stroller Derby …
It’s an alphabet of COLOR! woohoo! i am totally screwed here :o
It’s important to understand that there are 3 (there were 4) types of “color disfunction”:
You actually won’t find anything about red-yellow (and I won’t garauntee that that’s what it really is, green-yellow sounds more likely, to me) b/c it apparently got deleted from memory about 5 years ago, give or take. How do I know? B/c a few years ago I was looking at all this stuff about color issues, and I had 3. I’m missing blue-yellow, which means I have the fourth one. which doesn’t exist anymore :o
Color-based alphabet? mmmm, it’s like audio commentary for the deaf! closed captioning for hte blind! IT’S EVIL! EVIL i tell you!
couple weeks ago I started working on the front yard. spent an hour or two diggign out the azalea roots (they were dead last year and i cut them out), the tree stump, most of the forsythia, and whatever that stump that’s been out front since we moved in is from :o
basically i did the minimum start :o sprayed the backyard with weed-killer (that took almost another hour) and most of it’s withered now. well, the stuff on top :o
hopefully next week when i’m home by myself i can dig out the backyard (digging out the weed roots, then digging out hte random bushes and the “butterfly bush” which has turned into more of a tree …) and some of hte front for replanting
unfortunately azalea’s are out of season, so i can’t plant any more in the front for now except the one i got kiir for mother’s day :o
but, of course, all of this is based around me actually getting anything really done. but hopefully if I do, the back’ll become usable for sunning the cloth diapers, and maybe even for us to go out and sit back on the patio or something … right after i like put in some kind of function patio and maybe a table and chairs :o
so, kiir’s new hobby is tie-dye. we played with it some on sunday. can’t get any of the fancy schmancy stuff with the relatively cheap setup we did. she picked up some other stuff from a site that works differently and is supposed to be really good, so we’ll see how that works
hopefully this works out well. if it looks decent, it’s possible that we can actually do stuff up and sell it. money in would be nice :)
as of last week, des was up to 23″ :o 11#!!!
he’s fat and happy, that’s for sure. he’s starting to outgrow things … his footed jammies don’t really fit anymore, b/c he’s just too damned gangly. his smaller diapers aren’t closing real well anymore. but he’s doing well!
otherwise, he’s doing ok with tummy time on his boppy. sitting up with props. he can stand, kindof, as long as you’re holding him up. he’s turning into a real boy.
and i’m scared out of my effing mind that i’m going to screw things up somehow being a lousy father figure :/
a couple weeks ago i made the statement that i was gonna start walking
last week i took my new pedometer and measured again the k-walks. which came up way shorter than before :/ i don’ know which pedo was broken, but damned annoying
yesterday i went walking round the mall. usually i walk on the inside strip, with the sand gravel and people playing in the field etc. the tourist area. yesterday i decided to walk around the outside. or the backside. actually , i was kinda picking directions based on “damn, that light just turned, i don’t want to wait, i’l go this way” :o forgot the pedometer, but i’m fairly sure it was >5 mi … and damn did my feet hurt later. i think my shoes have started to die … again … ah well, at least i’m walking again.
weight’s back to 217. AGAIN. i was down to 213 after the hospital :( i need to start cutting back hard on how much i eat or something, b/c i cannot seem to lose weight otherwise :/ maybe i should start having steak once a week. i get one bite, k eats the rest, and everyone’s happy :o except i want to kill myself by tearing out my intestines with a spoon to make it hurt less, but otherwise happy :/
I’m not entriely sure i’m diggin my new job …
primarily b/c i’ve got shit-all to do most days. hell, even sudoku and kakuro have gotten boring. they’re either easy, or way more complicated (5* ones) than I’m interested in putting for the effort on (4* i can do in about 10 minutes, 5* I usually have to do two or three times b/c I miss some bit and end up with two 8′s in a row … i love how i can get all the squares, all the verticals, and have ONE wrong horizontal .. . wtf? shouldn’t this have an effect on something else ???) I’ve taken to taking my netflix in and watching them on my laptop while I read blogs. but the handful i read either update sporadically, or simply not that much, so it really doesn’t take a lot of time :/
then there’s the fact that when I do have something to do, it’s tweaking some BAD FUCKING CODE. one task i found this week was going through and tweaking some code that queries a database, saves THE ENTIRE RESULT to an array in a file, then a second script that gets used regularly to READ THE ENTIRE ARRAY in and use like 1 value. thats like 1 column of 1 result. it was done to “help” with database overhead, to keep it from overloading. apparently they didn’t realize that this is like 5 BILLION percent harder on the server, and that the database is DESIGNED for this shit. of coures, this is probably a result of the morons who have 5 databases, and so run 7 or 8 mysql servers, each one with all the databases that were there when whatever was added, none of htem in sync, and all of the shittily configured. but at least they know what they’re doing.
Oh, and that first script? it has 30 different SQL queries. 15 of them are identical except for the WHERE clause, then 10 more, then the last 5 are UNIONS that look like two of the previous queries munched together b/c they didn’t want to “complicate” the WHERE clause … *Sigh*
I kinda hate these scripts. i really want to gut the shit and start over everything i touch there, b/c it’s all just so BAD. oi. but i can’t, b/c that requires an official request, and since they work no one wants to request it.
and the DBA stuff I was hired to do? hell, most of my msyql access is stolen from the scripts I’ve worked on and i swipe the passwords so i can see what’s in the db that i’m accessing at least. can’t change anything.
*sigh* maybe if i get my mysql cert it’ll get better and i’ll be allwoed to swipe some of hte databases back internal like i was told was the original plan.
otherwise, I gotta start working on miscellaneous projects. like subversion and making vmware install to a user-dir instead of the root-dirs,and just have a run-as-root script for the root-necessary bits or stuff and whatever.
b/c the other option is looking for a new job again, and given that the last two times (02 and 06) the increase in income did absolutely nothing for the $$$ situation, i’m not sure it’s worth it. and if i do decide to in a year or so, i’ll have the cert, so maybe that’ll help ;)
