animal control came by the house today. K has to be on quarantine for 10 days. no playing with other peopel or dogs. so, 10 days in the house.

gonna try taking him on walks each night, but that only does so much. i mean, if that worked, i’d probably only put him in camp once a week or so. but it doesn’t. first of all, i’m too fat and lazy to walk him as much sa he wants. second, he doesn’t like to do one giant walk, more like 3 or 4 or 12 20-30 minute walks. third, it’s dark well before i get home, so we can only get to the library and back anyway, and half of that is fairly unlit.

fun fun fun. i hope bailey’s permanently thrown out for this shit.

PS: I remembered last night — at the hotel/kennel, they have big rooms that they split into two levels and put a small dog on each level. b/c the full room is like 8-10 feet high, and small dogs like K are only a foot MAYBE two off the ground. no problem, lotsa space for them still. Except bailey. they put him in one, and he kept jumping up and bashing his head against the ceiling. So much so, in fact, that he actually goose-egged his own skull. dumb fucking mutt.

K got in trouble today at camp :(

apparently he bit one of the people. when she reached in to break up a dogfight.

mind, the dog that he was fighting with continually harasses K (he’s kindof like the schoolyard bully). I can remember at least 4 times where they’ve told me “K got into a scuffle with bailey. bailey got removed”. And this is the second time bailey’s injured K. firs time was a scratch on his flank. this time there’s this huge fucking puncture in K’s back.

well no wonder K was pissed and decided to actualyl fight back sometimes. it’s one thing to try to ignore someone picking on you, but when they fucking vindictively hurt you, it’s time for an ass kicking!

I’m sorry for the girl he accidentally bit (broke skin, we may be getting a call from animal control, b/c they have to report skin breaks). but bailey needs to be permanently thrown the fuck out. b/c they’ve told me that he gets in fights with other dogs, not just K. K’s just a jack, like bailey, and since they’re in small-dogs they’re probably amongst the larger dogs. so K could actually fight back, when pushed enough.

gonna end up scheduling his bi-weekly stays AGAINST bailey, so this doesn’t happen again. K basically got a one week suspension for biting into one of the staff. which sucks, b/c we were going to put him in on friday b/c we’re going downtown to see les mis and he’s gonna be by hisself until like midnight.

grrrr. now *I* wana bite bailey! or his stupid effing owner.

went to the apple store about her laptop last night. it’s been crashing for a while, but in the last week it’s become unusable (crashing first thing in the morning in under half an hour …). got there abt 6:30 and after describing our problem we were asked if we had a genius bar appt. no, well, the next slot is at 8:30 (coincidentally, on the way in we’d made reservations at rainforest cafe for 8:30). fine, take that slot, go to dinner right then.

but i’m sorry, what’s the genius going to do with hardware? N OTHING! but apparently all issues are directed to the genius bar, b/c mac users are idiots and it’s easier this way.

so we’re sitting at the bar for like 10 minutes, there’s 4 employees at the registers and two wandering the store. OK, there’re only 3 registers, for starts :o fine, we sit. we sit. still sitting. absolutely no one is making any move to acknowledge our existence at the wholly empty and unmanned bar. i finally ask an employee, (8:35) and he says the guy should be out in a minute. but he’ll go check. lo and behold, once someone went to the back room and told him to get off his lazy ass and do his job, poof he bounds right out!

the head of my branch’s it security folks sent out a notice yesterday …

well, background, starting last week when it was discovered, until now, i’ve received a little undre a dozen emails at work about how dangerous the windows wmf flaw/exploit is and if you get infected it’ll be easier to rebuild the box yadda yadda

(incidentally i received more messages about the FCU phishing scam … and all 15 of those arrived in one day …)

yesterday a notice comes around about an unofficial patch on some site … and we’re being told we should install it. now, i presume that it’s been reviewed by people and determined that it’s non-trojan-ey an’ stuff. and i honestly haven’t looked at it.

but … recommending that we install an unofficial patch off the WEB?

come ON! at least commit so far as downloading it and hosting it locally on one of hte security divisions web servers. otherwise you’re just telling everyone that it’s OK to go out and download & install things they find on the web that say they’ll help!

and his reasoning for this when i aked??? b/c most of the users would just continue surfing and get hit by the bug, they’re not SMART ENOUGH to understand how not to get screwed. so we’re telling NOT SMART people to download and install thingsoff the net like they’re going to be able to make the distinction between good patch and bad patch on their own when we can’t trust them to surf websites?????

jesus.

Oh, and there’s a history of unofficial patches interacting poorly with official patches. and the sec guy acknowledged the possibility that everyone who applied this patch may get completely fucked on black tuesday …

and don’t get me started on black tuesday!

went to NYC on the 29th, came back yesterday.

trip up wasn’t too bad, amtrak to NY/penn then the subway from 34th to 23rd to 42nd (yeah, we kinda got on the wrong direction) (i looked at the train, it said, right on top, that it was going towards where i wanted to go! … of course, apparently NYC labels their trains with both endpoints, order unrelated DOH) When we turned around, while the doors were still open, the guy on the PA is announcing where the train is going, what the next 5 stops are, and then what the next stop is, again, in case you missed it. THEY COULDN’T'VE DONE THAT GOING THE OTHERWAY??

trip back, we actually picked the right train. :)

Saw Wicked and Spamalot. USA was having a 2 day marathon of law&order (SVU friday, CI saturday), so we spent the rest of the time watching that ;) looked out the window and shook our head at the idjits standing in rain/ice/snow at times square for 5+ hours before the ball dropped.

i ended up at the office briefly this afternoon. was doing some stuff, and checked one of the servers and … no response

so i check the window i have up for monitoring it (a holdover from a previous build where part of hte pipeline broke a lot, so i would watch for that on this system so i could fix it before it became an issue) … that connection crashed. so i reconnect, but not getting anywhere

so i end up at the office, where apparently my desktop’s wireless kbd needs new batteries. makes it harder to check things from there :o

down to the lab, bring up console … bring up console … check all the other switches on the kvm and all the other active connections are, in fact, active. go back, bring up console …

nothing. nada. zip. zilch. it’s like the screen is in saver mode, but not waking up. which usually means kernel crash (wakeup is a signal from the system, triggered by an internal event or a keystroke … except the keystroke isn’t passing to wakeup b/c the system isn’t there anymore)

reboot it. reboots itself a few times, then has me manually check the drives for errors. but it finally all came back up. works fine, too, it seems, now.

no idea what caused a crash like that. i’m guessing a brute force attack/dos on the sshd (seeign as thats the only port actually listening on that machine). so i locked ssh to only allow my two regular login points. meant to do that a while ago, but i was working on a tool to allow open ssh and lockouts for password attacks. never finished it, oops :)

So, we decided to do a pizza tonight, and we found a recipe for a pizza dough (write up over at Kitchen Dragons) and decided we’d try homemade dough then throw on pesto and cheeses.

See, I LOVE white pizza. And she has a thing for Pesto Pizza (OK, so do I, it rocks too). When we lived in atlanta, we almots always got the pesto pizza from mellow mushroom. since moving, i get pizza bianca’s from 3brothers a lot. This would be like combining both :)

except i wasn’t sure what to do about bits, and she was reading, so in the end apparently the pizza turned out 100% crap :/

And when you’re making dough from a recipe, it shouldn’t say “add toppings and cook according to directions” … b/c, in general, cheese DOESNT COME WITH DIRECTIONS! this is the pizza dough recipe, THIS should have the freakin directions man!

OK. So, changed to welbutrin last week. And just like in nov when i change lexapro->celexa, I get all kinds of sick. Head congestion, runny nose (and congested nose! HOW DOES IT DRIP WHEN ITS CONGESTED!), general cold, sleeping a lot, yadda yada

Hopefully this is just a transition thing, or maybe I just manage to keep catching something every time i change :o

sunday at the folks, then yesterday with her mom’s family … i spent probably half our stay sleeping on one sofa or another. at least i managed to drive home :o

thursday we’re off to NYC for a couple broadway plays and new years. hopefully i feel some better by then, b/ci’d hate to have paid for good seats and an outrageous sum for a hotel at new years, and then not enjoy myself.

*sigh*

K’s whining again, and i just keep losing my temper with him this weekend. it’s not really fair to him :/ maybe it’stime for another nap.

went in to the docs today, and she changed my scrip again. i’m now on welbutrin 300mg :o

this was b/c the celexa 40 was doing jackall. unfortunately, the lexa 40 seemed to have been working when i was doublign up the 20′s waiting on the scrip at the time.

but she forgot that, and thought the lexa hadn’t been working was why we went to celexa, so she was moving to welbutrin. when i explaine that that lexa appeared to be working when i was doing it 40′s, she stopped for a few moments (like a frozen robot from a movie) then decided we’d stick with the new scrip and if it didn’t seem to work well we’d go back to lexa

otoh, looking at the info on welbutrin on the web that i could find, looks like it might be better just b/c the selection of bits it’s used to treat are all things that we think i may be afflicted with, or am at least border on
